Dear Future 11 Claremont Ave. Homeowners,

The house was built somewhere between 1914 and 1918 at the tail end of the Arts and Crafts movement with that movement’s love of wood and cozy spaces. The first floor reflects that aesthetic influence, with its dark wood beams and its classic Arts and Crafts stone inglenook fireplace. By contrast, the upstairs, where the bedrooms are, is full of windows and light and airy. The two bathrooms provide ample room for families and guests. The large tub in the main bathroom with the recessed lighting and window is a wonderful place to end a hard day. The top floor of the house and the basement floor also offer space for playrooms, a sequestered bedroom or study — the flexibility to meet a family’s needs now and the ways those needs might change over time.

Half of the families on our block have lived on the block since their children were little, long before we arrived 13 years ago. They help create a strong connection on the block and a spirit of warmth and welcome. The house is ideally located. It is a block from Jefferson Elementary School and its large field and two playgrounds. It is exactly a half a mile into the town of Maplewood and its train station, with trains that take you directly to New York City in as little as 30 minutes. And the house is also half a mile from a walking entrance to South Mountain Reservation with its hiking trails, bike paths, dog park and more.

The house literally abuts the field that is part of the small, but beautiful and welcoming Maplewood Tennis Club with its four clay courts. Membership is relatively inexpensive and from the back deck of the house, you can see if courts are available and then be on the court in two minutes. When our daughter was little we’d leave the window open and tell her to call out if she needed us and play a game before the sun set in the summer nights. Even if you do not play tennis the muted sound of people laughing and the balls bouncing off the racquets is something we love as a backdrop the warmer season.

All and all the warmth and welcoming beauty of the house with its gorgeous Arts and Crafts wood detailing and cozy spaces downstairs, airy and light upstairs, and perfect location is one we have loved and are sorry to leave.
