LETTER TO FUTURE OWNER

This is a great house and Maplewood is a great town – we’ve loved living here for almost nine years now. We think what’s so special about it is that it combines the best of the old and the new, and the best of small town and big city, without forcing you to compromise.

First of all the house itself. Built in 1917, it offers generous family living space on four floors, with many elegant period details. But at the same time we have extensively upgraded it to meet today’s needs. We have – among many other things – put in central air conditioning, a new furnace, a tankless hot water system, a new roof, new appliances, remodeled the basement, and decorated inside and out. In a word, we’ve spent the money so you won’t have to!

It’s definitely a family-friendly house. It’s great for entertaining – we think our record was sitting down 15 people for Christmas dinner! And it has a big deck plus a large, flat and fully enclosed back yard which is perfect for kids and pets.

Then there’s the immediate neighborhood. We will miss our neighbors, many of whom have become friends over the years. As well as being smart and interesting people, we saw the true character of the neighborhood after Hurricane Sandy when everyone pulled together and looked out for each other.

And finally there’s Maplewood itself. If you’re relocating from the city you may be in two minds about moving to the ‘burbs. Don’t be. First of all, the house is an easy ten minute walk to the train, and then you’re into Penn Station in a little over half an hour. And as for Maplewood itself, we’ve got it all! New Jersey’s best downtown (in our view and that of NJ Magazine). Shops, cafes, restaurants, an Irish pub, a cinema – Maplewood has an authentic small-town vibe which feels a lot further away from New York than it actually is.
