Three years ago, we were in your shoes. Back in 2014, we were City dwellers juggling work and family life in a stereotypical, cookie-cutter two bedroom apartment with our third child on the way longing for a little thing called space— but not just any space. In order to uproot ourselves from our security blanket of 10+ years of life in New York City, we made our list of must haves: easy commute, a home with charm and character that also has been recently renovated and a community that provides opportunities for our children to thrive in their own personal interests and friendships. After weeks of searching and being physically, and quite frankly emotionally, exhausted we agreed to visit one more house before calling it quits. Our realtor drove us down the winding roads of Scotland and Prospect, down Fifth Street, onto tree covered Academy Street. We immediately gasped at the welcoming wrap around porch that would soon be utilized as the perfect setting for summer night glasses of wine in the rocking chairs and the beautiful colonial features carefully preserved from it’s original construction back in 1912. Walking through the front door instantly felt like we arrived home— the inviting staircase, the abundance of natural light and the sneak peek of kitchen that begs even the most novice of chefs to channel their inner Julia Childs.

Our final and most important item on our ‘must have’ list was meaningful opportunities for our young children. The fact is, if we didn’t need to relocate for work, there is no way (zero, zilch, nada) we would even remotely consider selling this home. Our toddler took his first steps right in the middle of this living room. The dining room has been elaborately decorated for nearly every single holiday and filled with dinner parties, laughter and home made meals. Our preschooler learned to use his scooter, donned in his beloved Star Wars helmet, up and down the sidewalks of Academy Street. Singing swells the second floor every morning as our kindergartner gets ready for school.
