Four years ago, after years of living abroad, we had the opportunity to move back to the US and were looking for a place to raise our 2 little girls. Our priorities included a short commute into NYC, an inclusive, diverse community, good public schools and walkability. A friend suggested we look in Maplewood and we are so happy that we did.
We remember that day when we first stepped out at the Maplewood train station. It was mid-March but the magnolias were in bloom and Memorial Park was brilliantly lush and green. We were in love from that moment and Maplewood has never disappointed.
We spent a while looking at homes in Maplewood but when we pulled up to 78 Courter Avenue, we knew this was our home.
It was unique among the houses we had seen and overwhelmed us with the Arts and Crafts beauty and character it offered. We knew that we could build a wonderful family life within its walls. This proved to be so true. I remember fondly the hours spent baking in our kitchen, the winter afternoons relaxing by the fire or the summer nights, enjoying a glass of wine and the evening breeze on the front porch.
Our girls have loved being two minutes from Maplecrest Park, the playground and the Hilton library. On school days, our girls join the neighborhood on the short walk to their pre-school and elementary school, meeting up with friends along the way. The summers have been full of bike rides around the neighborhood, trips to the wonderful Maplewood pool and a variety of other activities offered throughout the South Orange-Maplewood community. Of course, an ice-cream in town is never too far away.
Maplewood offers wonderful entertainment options for everyone. Whether we want to have a morning coffee at Able Baker and a hike in the South Mountain Reservation or enjoy dinner at Arturo’s and a movie in town, we are spoiled for choice. We have also loved spending a day in New York City and taking the quick train home to the natural beauty of Maplewood. For the days when we have to run errands, the downtown areas of South Orange and Millburn, are a quick drive as is Target, Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s and more.
All of these aspects make Maplewood a great place to live but it’s the people that have made our time in Maplewood truly special. The people who have chosen to live in Maplewood care about our community and each other. Having been abroad for years, the idea of being a part of such a positive community was very important to us and we were so lucky that this section of Courter Avenue particularly exemplifies that Maplewood spirit. Whether we are helping each other shovel the sidewalk after a snowfall, enjoying the annual block party or welcoming new babies into the world, the warmth and friendliness of this block is part of what has made us feel at “home” from the day we moved in.
78 Courter Avenue is a home filled with strength and character and our years here, although short, have been full of beautiful moments we will cherish. It is bittersweet leaving our home but family obligations pull us westward. We wish you much happiness and have no doubt you will find it here.
