Achieve Foundation’s 1st Annual Vanessa Pollock Music Initiative Awards Ceremony

For Immediate Release – November 5, 2015

Proud families and teachers gathered in the SO/M Schools’ District Meeting Room on November 2, to watch seven accomplished high school musicians receive the inaugural awards from the Achieve Foundation’s Vanessa Pollock Music Initiative. Each award was tailored to the specific needs of these gifted students . Some received new professional grade instruments:  a trombone, a clarinet and a violin. Others received funding for private instruction over the course of this school year.

The awards, totaling $10,500, were provided through the initiative established with the Achieve Foundation by Charlie and Vanessa Pollock. Vanessa’s Keller Williams Realty Team in Maplewood are committed to giving back to the community they serve in significant ways, including the music initiative, for which they raise funds at rousing concerts featuring Charlie and other Broadway performers.

At the awards ceremony, Vanessa Pollock spoke of the pleasure and confidence that she and her husband derived from their own performing arts training, which each of them began as children. She stressed the importance of enabling all young performers to pursue the arts vigorously, whether, like Charlie, they become professional actors, or they choose other vocational paths, as she ultimately did. In addition to the awards, the Pollock Initiative also benefited students at all SO/M schools, paying for instrument repairs, rentals for students with financial need and Achieve Teacher Grants for music projects.

CHS Band Director, Peter Bauer, Choral Director, Jamie Bunce and Orchestra Director, Todd Van Beveren nominated the students for the Pollock awards, because of their extraordinary achievements in music to date. They distinguished themselves with their effort, dedication and musicianship. The instruments and instruction funded by the awards also afford opportunities which would otherwise not be affordable to the recipients.

Mara Rubin, SO/M Supervisor of Fine Arts and Performing Arts, thanked the Achieve Foundation for its role in creating the Pollock Music Initiative and spoke graciously about the Pollocks and their appreciation for the value of music education. “I want to take this moment to thank you all for the time and generosity that you have given to the music students in the South Orange/Maplewood School District. These awards are a true testament to what the Vanessa Pollock Music Initiative stands for, and why I take my job so seriously. Making a difference in students’ lives through the arts is life–changing. I am thrilled to continue this important work together.”

Principal Elizabeth Aaron expressed thanks on behalf of Columbia High School before presenting the awards to recipients, Jessica Brice, Aanu Fawole, Ahmad Holiday, Autumn Jones, Louise Kern-Kensler, Lauren Kret and Isaiah Thomas. For more information on the initiative or the upcoming “Charlie Pollock and Friends” concert on Monday evening, December 14 in the CHS auditorium, go to achievefoundation.org or VanessaPollock MusicInitiative.com.

The Achieve Foundation is a non-profit organization that raises funds to promote exemplary, innovative public education for all students and educators in the School District of South Orange and Maplewood.

For Immediate Release – August 24, 2015 From the Achieve Foundation of South Orange and Maplewood

Summer Edition Concert Rocks and Benefits Music Education

Charlie Pollock and friends brought down the house at The Woodlands in Maplewood on June 19 and raised $10,000 (including $5,000 in matching funds from the Pollocks!) to support budding musicians in the South Orange and Maplewood schools. Vanessa Pollock and her Keller Williams Midtown Direct Realty Team hosted the event that featured  Broadway performers, Charlie Pollock  (Broadway’s Violet, 9 to 5, Loves Labours Lost, Urinetown) Stephanie J. Block (Tony Nominee for Mystery of Edwin Drood, Wicked, 9 to 5) and Becky Gulsvig(Hairspray, Legally Blonde) and their band, who electrified the audience with their all-rock program. One concert-goer said, “I wasn’t really up for going out again on a Friday after work, but I’m glad I did. I would have been really mad if I’d missed a night like this, walking-distance from my house!” Proceeds from this, the Pollock’s second semi-annual event will go the Achieve Foundation’s Vanessa Pollock Music Initiative. They established the fund in January to promote music education in the local schools by supplementing funding for approved Teacher Grants, helping to maintain the district’s inventory of instruments, underwriting rental fees for students in-need and supporting private instruction for exceptional music students who have financial need. Charlie Pollock’s first concert in December brought in over $6,000, which has already paid for 145 rental fees, repairs to a number of instruments and two Achieve Teacher Grant projects that will benefit more than 300 students each year: World Drumming and the CHS Guitar Club. Supervisor of Fine Arts and Performing Arts, Mara Rubin is delighted to work with the Pollocks and the Achieve Foundation to maximize the impact of these extra funds, which she welcomes heartily at a time when district funding for the arts is limited. “This extra money helps us to expand and enrich music education for so many students. We’ve always managed to find ways to cover basic costs for students in-need, but the Pollocks are enabling us to be even more effective and to expand our offerings for all students.” The Vanessa Pollock Team sees their role in the community as going beyond providing excellent professional real estate service to families in South Orange and Maplewood. While doing this, they have also committed themselves to vigorously supporting quality of life for all local residents by raising and donating more than $50,000 to charities, local schools, foundations and community events in 2015. Information Release from February 2015:

Many of you braved the early cold of this winter and joined us last December at the Woodland for a special evening of music. I wanted to update you on what has happened since that amazing evening together, at the HOLIDAY CONCERT 2014. Due to your extreme generosity, we as a community, were able to raise over $6000 for Music Education. Since then, I have met with the District and the Achieve Foundation to establish the next steps for those funds. It is with extreme pleasure that I share this message with you:

A Statement from Mara Rubin, SOMSD Supervisor of Fine Arts and Performing Arts, On the Establishment of the Vanessa Pollock Music Initiative

“I am thrilled to work with Vanessa and Charlie Pollock in their efforts to raise money for the music programs in SOMSD through the Achieve Foundation. The Pollocks’ vision is to make playing music accessible to all students. They are dedicating themselves to Achieve’s mission to promote educational excellence, innovation and equal opportunities for all children by establishing the “Vanessa Pollock Music Initiative” with an initial gift of over $6,000.
This money, which was raised from their first concert in December, will help Achieve pay for grants requested by teachers in the fall for music projects, including the CHS Guitar Club and World Drumming at SOMS. These two grants will benefit more than 300 students each year. Additional funds will go toward instrument rentals for 145 students, who otherwise would not be able to afford the rental fee. The Pollock’s generosity will also help cover the cost of instrument repairs so that the instruments the district loans to students are in the best condition. Moving forward, the funds will allow us to begin replacing our oldest instruments with newer, better sounding ones for our students to play.

The Pollocks have pledged to continue their efforts with Achieve to raise even more money for music through donations and by organizing more events. Future funds will pay for scholarships to support the music education of exceptionally talented students in-need, by providing them with their own instruments as well as weekly lessons from Master Musicians.

The Pollock’s commitment to support our continually growing music program is something that will truly change our students’ lives forever.” – Mara Rubin, SOMSD Supervisor of Fine Arts and Performing Arts

Love, Vanessa and the team
